6 Common Types of Heavy-Haul Equipment

Transporting heavy loads manually is not safe. Sometimes, the materials that need to be moved may also not fit regular vehicles, such as cars and vans. That is why heavy-haul vehicles are used by professionals who often deal with heavy equipment and bulky materials.

Mostly used in construction and industrial settings, different pieces of heavy-haul equipment allow your staff to safely and efficiently move machines and materials from one point of the jobsite to another. Sometimes, they are also tasked to carry heavy loads over longer distances.

There are different types of heavy-haul equipment used for different applications. Here are the most common ones:

Heavy-Haul Truck

Also called transport trucks, heavy-haul trucks are typically used to move large pieces of equipment and parts from one place to another. They can carry loads that weigh as much as 200 tons, depending on the transport truck’s specifications and model.

Because this type of vehicle often has higher travel speeds, it is often used for heavy-haul transportation services, which require professionals to transport heavy loads over longer distances. This means that companies don’t need to wait for several hours or days for their cargo to arrive.

Loader

Another piece of heavy-haul equipment that can be found in construction and industrial sites is the loader, which is also called bucket loader and scoop loader. This type of vehicle is used to take loose, heavy materials on the worksite and transfer them to another equipment, such as a conveyor belt or transport truck. Loaders can also be sometimes used to move smaller pieces of equipment from one point of the worksite to another.

Similar to other types of heavy-haul equipment, loaders can have tracks or wheels. This makes them ideal for any kind of terrain.

Crane

Often the biggest piece of equipment on jobsites, cranes are used to lift and move different kinds of heavy and bulky materials and supplies. It manages to achieve this through its wire ropes, sheaves, and hoist.

There are two types of cranes that can be used in a construction or industrial site. Mobile cranes, the first type, are mounted on a truck or flatcar and controlled using pulleys and cables. Because mobile cranes are not mounted on the ground, they can be moved across the jobsite easily.

Another type of crane commonly used in the worksite is the fixed crane. This piece of equipment is designed to carry heavier loads and have better reach than its counterpart. That is why it needs to be mounted on the ground or building.

Excavator

The excavator is often known as an earthmoving machine. It is primarily used to dig holes and aid in the demolition of buildings and other structures across the worksite.

However, because the excavator is a piece of versatile equipment, it can also be used to lift heavy supplies and materials on the jobsite. It can then be used to load the materials onto a transport truck for transportation to another location.

Forklift

Commonly found in warehouses and storage facilities, the forklift is another piece of equipment that can be used to lift and move heavy loads from one place to another. This machine is equipped with a forked platform that is attached at the front, which allows operators to raise and lower cargo.

Although forklifts are mostly used in warehousing, they can also be utilized on construction sites. They can be used to lift and carry boxes or pallets of materials across the worksite for increased safety and efficiency.

Bulldozer

Another versatile piece of equipment that can be used for heavy-haul transportation is the bulldozer. The bulldozer is typically used to loosen up the soil and move dirt on the worksite, especially in road and building construction projects. It can also be track- or wheel-based, which allows it to be used on different kinds of terrain.

Aside from moving dirt around, the bulldozer can also be used to load loose materials onto the back of a transport truck. Because of its capacity, the bulldozer can make moving soil and dirt much faster and easier.
